SOMEȘ Water Company, through its own “Leonida Truță” Water Museum, is, since 2017, co-initiator and founding member of the Global Network of Water Museums in the world, established on the occasion of an international conference held with the support of the UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Culture in Venice.
The 2017 Founding Conference was attended by Water Museums from 29 countries around the world on five continents : Europe, Asia, Africa, South and North America.
The stated aim of the Network – abbreviated to WAMU-NET – was to “essentially re-establish a new relationship between humanity and water, a new sense of civilisation that will help us reconnect water with people in all its dimensions, including the social, cultural, artistic and spiritual“. And Water Museums, as unique repositories of the various Water Civilizations that have developed throughout the world, have from a historical perspective a major role to play in this purpose.
After the establishment of the Network, steps were taken to place the Network under the auspices of UNESCO, more specifically the International Hydrological Programme – UNESCO IHP.
In May 2018, the Network’s website was officially launched – http://www.watermuseums.net/ – where, to begin with, some of the founding Museums are presented in detail, including the “Leonida Truță” Water Museum of the SOMES S.A. Water Company – http://www.watermuseums.net/museum/leonida-truta-water-museum/ .
In June 2018, the SOMEȘ Water Company’s Water Museum was briefly presented to the UNESCO IHP Intergovernmental Council in an exhibition of the Global Network of Water Museums, which then unanimously adopted Resolution XXIII-5 approving that the Global Network of Water Museums to which SOMEȘ Water Company S.A. through its own Museum is co-initiator and founding member, to operate under the auspices of UNESCO, with the aim of educating and raising awareness through joint efforts, the international public in the field of water.
In 2021, the second UNESCO resolution was adopted to continue UNESCO’s support for the Global Network of Museums.
